3 Good Reasons You’ll Want Good Oral Health Before Getting Cosmetic Dentistry

Getting smile enhancements through cosmetic dentistry can certainly be exciting. You’re ready to go and want to enjoy your dream look as soon as possible, but your dentist saw something during your oral evaluation that gave them pause. What do you do? Can’t you restore your oral health after receiving your dental cosmetics?

There are at least three good reasons why you shouldn’t wait! Keep reading, and your dentist’s recommendation will start to make more sense.

1.     Support

Many, if not all, oral conditions weaken your dental supports in some way. Gum disease, for example, attacks the gumline and can cause it to recede, which means less pink tissue is available to help hold your pearly whites in place. Cavities, meanwhile, eat a hole through your enamel, making your teeth vulnerable to damage and further erosion.

In both cases, a dental cosmetic like veneers or Lumineers would likely fall off or fail due to lack of structural support!

2.     Longevity

Ultimately, dental cosmetics are able to last a lot longer in a healthy oral biome. With no cavities or gum disease around to cause failure, they’ll be free to live out their lifespan as effective smile enhancements. And you’ll be free to spend some extra cash on something fun, rather than on dental cosmetic replacements!

Before you start thinking “maybe the problem will go away on its own anyway,” you should know that oral conditions don’t get better – only worse. Prolonging a much-needed emergency or restoration appointment is only going to make things more complicated (and costly) in the long run.

3.     Comfort

Plus, certain dental cosmetic treatments are rather painful when existing oral conditions are present. Teeth whitening, for example, uses powerful (but safe) bleaching agents to lift stains from your teeth. Under normal circumstances, you wouldn’t experience much discomfort – but with an active case of cavities or gum disease, your teeth will be much more sensitive to the bleaching agents. It’s best to wait until you’re rid of these conditions so you can have a comfortable treatment.

It’s nice to have a smile you’re proud to show off. Your excitement is understandable! However, if you get too carried away and neglect to take care of your oral health first, your beautiful new dental cosmetics are likely to fail or cause discomfort. Let your dentist treat any existing oral conditions, then look forward to achieving your dream smile.
