Speaking of Invisalign, Will It Make Me Talk Funny?

Ladies have conversation

Invisalign is a relatively recent innovation in orthodontics that allows patients to discreetly realign their smiles with customized sequences of clear aligners. While this makes this option excellent for many people who have reservations about wearing traditional braces, the treatment can make it slightly difficult to speak clearly when you first start wearing your aligners. Here’s a brief guide to how you can get back to speaking clearly more quickly during Invisalign treatment.

How Does Invisalign Straighten Teeth?

The Invisalign process begins with your dentist using a specialized device to scan and create a three-dimensional digital map of your mouth. This data will then be used to manufacture a sequence of customized clear aligners designed to snugly fit over your teeth while exerting the constant pressure necessary to gradually shift them into healthier positions. You’ll wear each set of aligners for about two weeks before switching to the next set in the sequence, and each pair will bring your smile closer to its ideal alignment.

This process can take anywhere from several months to a year or more, and it can deliver amazing results without the irremovable metal parts and extensive dietary restrictions that come with traditional braces.

How Can Invisalign Affect My Speech?

While the clear aligners used for Invisalign treatments are incredibly thin, they are thick enough to add a small amount of volume to your teeth. This is sometimes enough to significantly alter the way vibrating air moves about your mouth during speech, which may lead to a lisp. While this issue may be rather annoying, it should be temporary and go away on its own after you get more practice speaking while wearing your aligners.

How Can I Get Rid of My Lisp More Quickly?

If you’re eager to get rid of the lisp that may have developed after you began Invisalign, there are a few excellent ways to accelerate the adjustment process. A few of these include:

  • Singing a song
  • Reading a favorite book out loud and repeating any troublesome words until you can say them easily
  • Reciting elocution exercises used by actors and public speakers such as “How now, brown cow?” and “You know you need unique New York.” You can find extensive lists of these by using a search engine.

Lisps developed by Invisalign patients are generally mild and short-lived. Consulting with your dentist can help you find the best ways to maintain your comfort during orthodontic treatment.
