Easing New Aligner Discomfort
August 1, 2024
Patients and dentists agree that clear aligners are more comfortable than metal braces. You don’t have to worry about sores or irritation from brackets or wires. You won’t have to deal with tugging or pulling on your teeth. However, no orthodontic treatment is completely pain-free. You can expect some temporary discomfort when first getting your Invisalign. Here are a few easy tips to manage your discomfort.
Temporary Mild Discomfort is Expected
Mild discomfort is actually a sign that your treatment is working. Your aligners will apply gentle pressure to specific teeth to move them in small increments. This can make your mouth a bit tender, especially after getting your aligners. You can also experience temporary tenderness when switching to a new aligner in your series. Tenderness will become less frequent as you progress through your treatment.
Take an Over-the-Counter Pain Reliever
Your discomfort should only last for a day or two. Take over-the-counter pain relievers to manage your discomfort.
Eat Soft Foods
Choose foods that require minimal chewing to avoid putting pressure on your sore teeth. Don’t forget to remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything except water. Brush your teeth and rinse your aligners before putting them back into your mouth.
Apply a Cold Compress
Applying a cold compress to sore areas can help reduce your pain. It will numb the area to keep you comfortable. Cool treats can also help, like smoothies.
Stay of Schedule
You can avoid discomfort by following your treatment plan. Ensure you are wearing your aligners for at least 22 hours per day. If you’re not wearing them long enough, your teeth won’t have enough time to move properly before switching to the next set. You must change your aligners every 1 or 2 weeks as instructed by your dentist. Switching them too soon will rush the process and cause pain and complications. Changing them too late will have allowed your teeth to begin healing in that position, increasing discomfort as they are moved.
Although you can expect some discomfort, it will not last. You can manage it easily at home to keep your treatment on track.
