How Dental Insurance Works
Dental coverage plans can come in many forms. The majority of people typically choose a PPO plan, allowing them to visit any dentist and/or specialist, regardless of if they have a referral. The benefits from each plan can vary from one another, but here’s what you can expect from most coverage options:
- Preventive care usually has 100% of the cost covered, including checkups and cleanings, examinations, X-rays, and oral cancer screenings.
- Basic services, such as tooth fillings and simple tooth extractions, can generally receive up to 80% coverage.
- Major procedures like dental crowns, root canal treatment, wisdom tooth extractions, and other oral surgeries may have about 50% of the price paid for.
- Orthodontia might not always receive coverage, but certain premium plans can help pay up to 50% of the overall cost of treatment.
- Cosmetic dentistry is typically never covered, though there may be exceptions if the procedure has restorative purposes.
What is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?
While both insurances are designed to help people save money while getting necessary treatments, there are some differences between the two kinds of coverage. Medical insurance plans are generally meant to help patients purchase services that can improve their systemic or overall health. That said, it isn’t usually applied to preventive care and mostly helps with problems that have already happened. On the other hand, dental insurance highly prioritizes preventive care, meaning your provider wants to help you avoid needing more costly treatments in the future.
In-Network vs. Out-of-Network
Dentists can either be in-network or out-of-network with certain dental insurance plans. If a practice is in-network, it only means that they have pre-negotiated prices for treatments that are included in the policy. However, even if we’re out-of-network with your specific provider, it doesn’t mean we won’t be able to work closely with them to minimize your out-of-pocket expenses. We will still be happy to file insurance claims for you while also creating a strategy for maximizing your benefits. In many cases, patients can end up enjoying most of the same perks that you might expect from visiting an in-network dentist.
